Mário Zagallo, a four-time World Cup winner with Brazil as a player and coach, died Jan. 5. He was 92. After playing in two World Cup winning teams in 1958 and 1962, he went on to win the tournament in 1970 as head coach, masterminding an all-conquering Brazil widely regarded as one of the greatest teams in history. With that success, he became the first ever person to win the tournament as both a player and a coach, before he added a fourth trophy in 1994 as assistant coach to Carlos Alberto Parreira. German football legend Franz Beckenbauer passed away on Sunday, aged 78. Franz Beckenbauer is widely considered to be one of the greatest players in the history of the soccer game. He is also one of only three men to win the World Cup as both a player and a manager. As a player, he starred with German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich from 1965 to 1977, winning five league titles and three European Cups over the course of his 582 appearances. During his stint, he won the Ballon d’Or, awarded to the best player in the men’s game, in 1972 and 1976, becoming the only defender ever to win the award twice. He led West Germany to two World Cup triumphs, first as a player in 1974, then as a head coach in 1990.(CNN News, 2024-1-6/8)

Boeing stock drops as Alaska Airlines incident adds to woes

The Alaska Airlines flight, which had been travelling from Portland, Oregon, to Ontario, California, on Friday, made an emergency landing after part of the wall of the aircraft detached itself, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the plane. The cause of the incident has not been determined. As investors grew worried about possible damage to the businesses after a piece of fuselage on a Boeing 737 Max 9 blew out mid-flight, shares of Boeing and one of its key suppliers dropped sharply on Monday. Boeing (BA) shares dropped more than 8%, while shares of aerospace supplier Spirit AeroSystems (SPR) fell by about 11%. Meanwhile, United Airlines on Monday said it found loose door plug bolts on an undisclosed number of its Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft during its FAA-mandated inspections of the aircrafts following the Alaska Airlines incident.
